Tax Topics
Use the "Search all Topics" feature on the Homepage or browse the "Main Topics" to the left to begin your research.
The search feature for Tax Map appears on the Tax Map Homepage, which you can reach by clicking on the Tax Map logo shown here and found in the upper left-hand corner of each page. Tax Map contains approximately 5,000 topics; the search feature provides users with a convenient way to find topics rather than scrolling through a long list.
Federal Taxes: Using as few words as possible, type in the keyword(s) you are looking for and click "Search" or press the enter key. The results page will appear with links to tax information, forms and related topics.
State Taxes: Type in the name of your state and click "Search" or press the enter key. The results page will appear with links to all types of state tax information for your state.
Fine Tune Results: Use the "Federal Taxes" and "State Taxes" tabs that appear in the search results to fine tune your search. Click on the "x" to the right of the "Search" button to clear search results.
Note: This facility searches a list of topics that includes form and publication numbers, titles, tax law terms, and publication headings. Search all topics is a simple keyword search, not a full text search or boolean/logic. For best results, use the singular version of the word. For example, a search on "Foreign Tax" would yield topics including:
Foreign Income Taxes
Foreign Taxes
Foreign Tax Credit
To widen the search, just search on the word "Foreign".
Browse through a list of approximately 400 "hub topics" and "key entry point topics" to start your search. "Hub topics" (e.g., Business) gather on one page all topics within Tax Map that contain the word "business." Key entry point topics have been identified as frequently used topics by a team of IRS tax law professionals.
